Rob: Before releasing Ancient of Days we didn’t do many live shows at all, but after releasing that album we got to play more live shows and that has definitely made us grow as a band.įor our gearhead readers, tell us about your rig. Nik: I hate to give boring answers but, aside from this pandemic paralyzing everything in society, nothing significant has happened. It has been five years since “Ancient of Days.” Aside from Covid, what is the most significant event to have happened to you as a band and as individuals? We were pretty well-rehearsed and the songs were more or less done so it was pretty relaxed. There were the usual technical problems but all in all the recording went smooth. Rob: Yes, the actual recording took a day or so long mostly because of the time it took to transport, load, and set up all the gear we brought to that house. Writing the material took some time but the actual recording was done over a weekend except for some vocals and overdubs. No, it wasn’t recorded at the bottom of the sea, but in a house in the countryside. Nik: Haha I haven’t heard that one before. Why the big disparity? Also, the latest album was reportedly recorded in “bathysphere?” Really? Tell us about the recording experience. I understand your previous album “Ancient of Days” was recorded over a weekend, whereas “Abyssal Trip” took quite a bit longer. Nik: Thank you! Usually describing your own music is best left to others, but I would say it is, for the most part, slow, heavy, loud, and dynamic. For the uninitiated, describe your sound in five words or less. I have shared your music with several people already. I call them a great new discovery.Ĭongratulations on the new album. Call them Doom, Stoner, whatever you like.

Their latest album is “Abyssal Trip” and the music is as vast as the name implies. For lack of a better word, pure "hate".Spelljammer is a Stockholm-based trio that “likes it slow and heavy.” I listened to every one of their songs and while the tempo rarely exceeds 80 bpm, there is still enough texture and variation to keep the most impatient person (that’s me) satisfied. Doom angry, not blues angry or something. There's also something about the aggression factor with this fuzz - it sounds ANGRY. That's what drew me in to the Fuzz War - it sounds HUGE, but the low end can totally chug! Forget pairing it with an OD - then it's just insane and a really great combination of a huge fuzz sound with even tighter low end. I've also tried quite a few fuzz pedals and was always bummed out about the woofy low end. Maybe Fuzz War sounds are achievable within the Axe, but $100 for this pedal got me there without having to spend loads of time editing, trying to find that sound.

Don't get me wrong - I've been able to get some crazy doom sounds with just the axe, but there's still something special about running a dedicated fuzz pedal. Yes, that's exactly what I'm using it for - think Russian Circles / Deafheaven type heavy (Mike Sullivan also uses the Fuzz War). I'd like to keep the I/O level where it's at since it sounds good when the fuzz is off (I made a previous thread on I/O level and how it sounded different to me at certain numbers - don't make fun of me please!)

Lowering the level to 9 o'clock on the fuzz war fixes this, but the pedal itself reacts differently at a lower volume setting. It doesn't sound bad per say, but I'm worried about messing something up. If I keep the volume at noon on the fuzz war, the input clip lights are consistently red. I just picked up a Death By Audio Fuzz War (sounds awesome) and I'm running it into the front of my axe fx II XL. It's also worth mentioning that the pedal sounds pretty crummy with the axe vs the real life deluxe reverb. In fact, the output cuts when it's engaged. The fuzz war volume control does nothing at all. The Fuzz war has tons of boost on tap when running into the Actual amp while going into the front of the axe (using deluxe verb vibrato amp), there's virtually no boost at all. So I did a side by side comparison of my Deluxe Reverb Reissue against the Axe + Matrix gt1000 - both going through my Mesa Recto 2x12 cabinet.
